In the modern age, there are more ways to access radio/ podcast stations. For example, the traditional ways would either be through radio players, that are either in your house or built into your car. However, people can now listen to radio or podcasts on their phones, allowing them to listen as they go. Such as on a train, on a long walk. However, some people also listen to the radio on their TV as some people don't own a radio player, therefore using apps and channels provided to them on a Smart TV works just as good. 

Multiplatform distribution has been beneficial for Switched on Pop, as about 87% of the population have tuned into listening to the radio every week in the UK. 

The reason why this benefits Switched on Pop, is because they use a more modern way of producing and publishing their content by using streaming platforms and their own websites. This makes it much easier for their audience to find their latest content and additional information about the team themselves and what content they produce onto their Podcast. 

The reason why Switched on Pop has chosen to go more digital with their podcasts, is because over the years it has increased in popularity, due to how easy it is to access, along with being able to listen to radio's/ podcast's wherever they are. 

According to RAJAR, 44 million adults aged 15+ now listen to radio from a digital platform whether that be DAB, DTV, Website/ App, or Smart Speaker each week.

 Digital Technology And Radio Production 

Analogue to Digital 

Like all media, radio has been radically altered by the transition to digital production methods.

The term DJ stands for Disc Jokey 

DJ's do present radio shows as well as introducing and the play songs.

Traditionally, all radio productions was dominated by analogue technologies.

Songs were played using vinyl records or 8 track tapes.

The song had to be manually cued by the Disc Jokey. This was very time consuming, along with having less storage space due to how many had to be stored. 

Pre-recorded packages, idents, trailers, adverts, would have been recorded using analogue tapes and the spliced that were manually done by cutting up the tapes and splicing it back in the right order. If you were to cut out a part you wanted to keep, you would have to re shoot then entire thing to ensure in keeping that part of dialogue. Gathering the recordings and tapes, were also very expensive for those who were independent radio stations, and would often re use footage. 

C.D.

C.D. stands for compact Disc

In the 1980s Compact Discs start replacing analogue formats such as Vinyl's, due to their sound quality being more superior and robust.

In the 1990s, recordable digital formats such as mini-discs and Digital Audio Tape. This made digital media radio productions far more easier than ever.  

In the 21st century digital technology has been used more commonly on radio productions.

Some CDs are still sometimes used most radio music is stored on computer servers called "Play Servers" that made it far more easier to play songs, rather than having to manually change it every time, As you could que different songs which would save a lot of time. 

Digital mixing desks control the live mixing of the programme. Such as changing the volume of audio, having the ability to switch from one audio to another. Also, you can fade audio to either quiet other people talking, or toning down the people talking and transition into the song that is about to be played. 

High quality digital music formats such as WAV and FLAC are used for digital broadcasts, as they have much better quality than standards. However, they take up a lot more storage for how good it is. 

Non-Linear editing packages such as Pro-Tools, Adobe Audition or Soundbooth, and Cubase are used to edit recorded programmes, packages, idents, adverts. 

Editing and Reviewing content

 Trimming the audio of the podcast 

For the first part of editing my podcast I used Adobe Audition to gather up my audio, where I would cut out the part of the podcast that were either not suitable for the audience, or cutting out topics that needed to go to make my podcast less time consuming. The reason why I decided to cut out a lot of content that was added into the original footage, was because the overall running time of my podcast came close to around 50 minutes, which is far too long for the audience who are listening to it. Also, some of the topics discussed in my podcast were controversial or could potentially offend people who are listening. 

The second part of editing came from Adobe Premiere. This was because it was much more easier gathering the new edited audio for the podcast, along with adding in the station jingle. Whilst going through the footage I enhanced the audio of the people who were speaking in the podcast, as the raw audio was not as loud as what I was expecting. This would benefit the people who are listening to the podcast, as they wouldn't need to turn up their volume as much to hear it.

For the first part of the podcast, we used the recording sound booth in UTC, where I collected the audio of my co host Jack before we planned on adding in a guest for the rest of the podcast. This was all later merged together using Adobe Audition. 

L04: meeting minutes/ Production Plan

 

For my production plan, we did in-fact not stick to the time that was originally set up for the Podcast. The original plan was to keep it around 10 minutes at most. However, by the time we finished recording it reached to around 50 minutes. The issue with this was a lot had to cut. In addition to this we added in a co-host meaning there was now 3 of us that allowed more conversations to start. 

However, the content that you see above are still in the podcast with some slight improvements with the facts that are said in the podcast backed up.
